Main economy activities includes trading (largely to support the agriculture acitivities such as rice, rubber and oil palm plantations), manufacturing of electrical and electronic components, and production of moulded plastic parts for the consumer products indutry.

Kedah State Economy

Although main commercial activities in Kedah is rice farming, the central and state governments have been actively building up the industrial activities in Alor Setar, Sungai Petani and Kulim since the late 1970s. Commercial agriculture and tourism have been promoted strongly as well especially the tourism in Langkawi Island and the historical sites around Alor Setar.

Kedah is a member of the IMT Growth Triangle which established in July 1993. Members states include Sumatra of Indonesia, Perlis and Kedah of Malaysia, and Southern Provinces of Thailand.

There are more than 20 industrial parks in Kedah supported by numerous local and foreign investments mainly in the areas of electrical and electronic, fabricated metal products, moulded plastic parts and chemicals and chemical products. Key investments are such as the Perwaja Steel Plant at Gurun and National Motorcycle Plant at Sg. Petani.
